We regret to inform you that Gigi Hammely, your favorite Swiftie, knitting extraordinaire, and "World's Best Grandma" (as voted by her adoring grandkids), has officially left the building. Born on a sunny day in Portland, OR on September 2, 1964, Gigi embarked on a life filled with laughter, ambition, and a never-ending supply of empathy. She lived in every nook and cranny of the world, but found her true home in Boise, ID, alongside her biggest fan and loving husband, James.
Gigi was a woman who knew how to find the humor in every situation. She was never one to take herself too seriously, and she'd want this obituary to reflect that. So, in the spirit of Gigi, let's celebrate her life with a smile. She was a woman of many talents - she could knit a sweater faster than you could say "purl," and her garden was the envy of Boise. But her greatest achievement, she'd tell you, was convincing her grandkids that she ran marathons. Really, she just loved to watch them. As Gigi would say, quoting her favorite Taylor Swift song, "I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 22!"
Gigi was a woman of faith, deeply involved in her Catholic church where she loved to sing in the choir and serve others. As it's written in Matthew 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Gigi’s light shone brightly throughout her life, and she would want us now to continue shining our lights in her honor.
Gigi is survived by her doting husband, James, and her daughters and granddaughter, all named Mary Jones (confusing, we know). She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Hammely. Gigi's life will be celebrated with a graveside service on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 10:00am MDT at Diversity Family Funeral Home, and a funeral service a week later on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at 9:00am MDT at the same location. For those who cannot attend in person, you can join us online via the live stream links.
As Gigi would say, "Don't be sad because it's over, be happy because it happened." So in the spirit of celebrating her life, we encourage you to share your favorite stories and photos of Gigi on her memorial page. After all, it's what Gigi, the ambitious, empathetic, funny, and witty woman we all loved, would have wanted.
